Volver
Volver
Coming Back
DVD in Spanish with optional English subtitles.
A complete Spanish lesson plan for Volver -- ready to open and teach.
About the film
Raimunda's mother is dead -- everyone knows this -- and then she turns up. Almodóvar's Volver is about women holding everything together through violence, grief, and impossible secrets, and it manages to be warm and funny throughout. Penélope Cruz gives one of the great performances in Spanish cinema here. The film rewards close attention at every level.
How this plan works
Good films have natural moments -- a powerful scene, a cultural encounter, a shift in the story -- where the language and meaning come together. This plan identifies those moments in Volver and builds a lesson around each one. For every scene, you get vocabulary and cultural notes, comprehension activities, and communicative tasks your students can work through in class or independently. A pre-film warm-up gets them ready before the first screening.
Everything is included: the teacher's guide, student worksheets in Spanish, and an answer key.

Teach it when it counts
- Mother's Day / spring semester family units -- Motherhood, sacrifice, and what women absorb without complaint -- this film says it all, and says it in Spanish.
- Dia de los Muertos (November 1-2) -- The film's central premise -- a dead woman walking among the living -- maps directly onto the holiday's cultural logic.
- AP Spanish Language and Culture -- Almodóvar's most accessible recent film at the advanced level -- a natural companion to Todo Sobre Mi Madre.
