Miguel "Sugar" Santos is a Dominican baseball prospect. He has been trained since he was a child for one thing: to make it to the major leagues and support his family back home. Sugar follows him from the Dominican Republic through the minor leagues in Iowa and eventually to New York — where the dream doesn't quite work out the way it was supposed to, and he has to figure out what his life is now. It is one of the most honest films about the immigrant experience in American English, and for an ESL class it provides something rare: the English of a non-native speaker navigating a country that is friendly and completely incomprehensible simultaneously.
For ESL students, Sugar's English journey mirrors their own. He arrives knowing "eggs over easy" and "line drive" and not much else. Low-prep classroom activity: Students write a letter in English from Sugar to his family in the Dominican Republic — after his first month in the minor leagues. He must describe one thing that surprised him, one thing he misses, and one thing about America he doesn't know how to explain. The constraint produces authentic personal narrative from a motivated position.
What to listen for: Miguel acquires English in real time across the film — from none to functional, from functional to enough. Students can track his acquisition: the first English words, the first sentences, the first moment he understands something he wasn't expecting to understand. Ask students to identify one specific English exchange in the film and describe what Miguel understood and how he knew he understood it.
