Rue Cases-Nègres (Sugar Cane Alley)

On a lush sugar cane plantation in Martinique lies a dirt road called Sugar Cane Alley (Rue Cases-Nègres), lined with the shacks of the poor black families who work in the cane fields. In one of these lives José, a bright, mischievous 11-year-old orphan, and his grandmother, a tough, wise woman determined to save José from the hard life of the plantation.
